ULTRASONIC SCALING & POLISHING

Doctor Name

Dr. Sanjay Singh

Ultrasonic scaling and polishing are common dental procedures that are performed as part of routine dental hygiene care. They are important for maintaining oral health by removing plaque, tartar (calculus), and stains from the teeth, which can help prevent gum disease and maintain a bright smile. These procedures are usually painless and are typically performed by dental hygienists.

Here's an overview of ultrasonic scaling and polishing:

Ultrasonic Scaling:
Ultrasonic scaling involves the use of an ultrasonic scaler, which is a handheld instrument that produces high-frequency vibrations. The scaler has a metal tip that vibrates at a rapid rate and emits water. The water helps to cool the tip and flush away debris as the scaler removes plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth and along the gumline.

The ultrasonic scaler can effectively break down and remove hardened deposits of plaque and tartar that may have accumulated on the teeth. It's especially useful in hard-to-reach areas or areas with heavy tartar buildup.

Hand Scaling:
After ultrasonic scaling, dental hygienists may use hand instruments called scalers and curettes to manually remove any remaining smaller deposits of tartar. These tools have curved and pointed ends that allow the hygienist to access different surfaces of the teeth.

Polishing:
Once the teeth are free of plaque and tartar, the dental hygienist will use a dental polishing tool and a special polishing paste. The paste is gently applied to the teeth and the polishing tool spins to create a smooth and shiny surface on the tooth enamel. Polishing helps to remove surface stains and create a clean appearance.

Fluoride Treatment:
In some cases, a fluoride treatment may be applied after scaling and polishing. Fluoride helps strengthen the enamel and provides additional protection against tooth decay.

Both ultrasonic scaling and polishing are important components of maintaining good oral hygiene. They contribute to the overall health of your teeth and gums, improve the appearance of your smile, and help prevent dental problems in the future.

Regular dental check-ups and cleanings, which include ultrasonic scaling and polishing, are recommended every six months for most individuals. However, the frequency of these procedures may vary based on individual oral health needs and your dentist's recommendations. If you have specific concerns or questions about ultrasonic scaling, polishing, or your oral health in general, it's best to discuss them with your dentist or dental hygienist.
